Excellent collection of early American industry with emphasis on Waltham area businesses
Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation的点评
点评:The Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation has an excellent collection of early American industry, with an emphasis on Waltham area businesses. The displays and artifacts cover the start of the America Industrial Revolution in Waltham, its expansion to other New England cities as demand of products grew (and the local water power couldn't keep up). In addition to the early cotton mills, this Museum also covers other early industries such as the once extensive watch and related timepieces industry.
The emphasis at the Museum was the machinery used to create and repair the factory production lines, so there are more samples of the machine tools being used. For actual examples of the operating woolen mills, you should visit the Boots Wood Mill Museum in Lowell. Many of the same precision crafts needed to make one type of machine tool (such as for a clothing mill) are also shown being applied to other types of manufacturing (such as the timekeeping gears for a pocket watch). You can see how Waltham developed its reputation for skilled manufacturing.
The Museum also provided a detailed history of the mill owners, and how their relationship with their workers changed over time. A great place to visit if you're interested in early American industrial history.
