点评:If you are looking for a once in a lifetime experience in the Alaskan wilderness, this is it.
We met Courtney and the Moon Dogs in September 2023 when she was doing a sled dog talk. She explained how the kennel she runs with her partner, Brian, is focused on hauling freight rather than racing dogs. The dogs live with them for their entire lives, enjoying the couch dog life after they have gotten too old to pull the weight and run long distances, which is ~11-14 years old (quite old for a large breed dog). The dogs' longevity goes to show how well cared for they are, and that they are getting the right exercise.
It is clear that Courtney and Brian want to share their love of sled dogs and Alaska with everyone. They offer day trips or overnight excursions where they prepare everything you'll need, and you just need to show up with a positive attitude and a warm base layer. We decided to go for the 3-day trip. The first day was a training day where we learned how to handle the sled and communicate with the dogs. The second and third days were an overnight trip out to a cabin in the remote wilderness. The dogs know the path, even when it's covered in snow, so we didn't need to follow any maps. It had just snowed, so the dogs actually puts down the path so people who would like to use the trail by snow machine (snowmobile) are able to safely do so. Once at the cabin, the dogs are well fed and get lots of pets and love. They spend unstructured time running around and playing, so you can see that they still have plenty of energy after ~4 hours of trotting through snow. As mentioned, the Moon Dogs are freight dogs, so the distance is covered at a comfortable pace. If there are any hazards along the way, Courtney and Brian would stop, tell us how to safely pass them with the dogs, and once through, check on us in case we had any follow up questions. The entire time on the sled, I felt confident that our safety and the dogs' safety were top priorities. At the cabin, Brian set up the stove while Courtney fed the dogs. They made a homemade meal for dinner with a cobbler for dessert with blueberries they had picked themselves. It was filling and delicious. The cabin was warm despite the chilly air outside and we slept on a comfortable bed with clean sheets.
The scenery was stunning, and we were very fortunate to have perfect weather and a clear view of Denali for part of the route.
The cost of the trip was incredibly worth it. We had undivided attention of two experienced Alaskan winter guides, who had a wealth of knowledge of the history and landscape of the area. They pointed out animal tracks in the snow, identified owls by their call, and made sure we saw any wildlife, like herds of caribou or grouse on trees, along the trail. We can't speak highly enough of Courtney and Brian and the Moon Dogs and the experience they provide.
