First time stopping in, plenty of wildlife
Chase State Fishing Lake的点评
点评：In Oct. 2023, Kansas was treated to something rare: An American flamingo sighting. Only third recorded in state history, the first in 50 years. It picked Chase State Lake. Following a birding page, I know many first-timers at the lake were impressed. It's two hours from home, so on a trip to Kansas City, the gf and I chose to take the slightly longer route to catch a glimpse of the big, pink bird.
It's not so far from the highway. I think all said, you're about 20 miles from the sprawling metropolis that is Emporia. But this is Chase County with some smaller towns, and a crazy courthouse in the nearby county seat. Lake entrance is about 3-4 miles off the main roads either way. It's a relatively small but seemingly well-maintained lake. A decent gravel road takes you up and down the north side of the lake with several pullouts for camping or viewing.
I know little about lakes or amenities. Did see a covered bathroom that may have been a whole in the ground but beats the wild. In many of the flamingo shots, I've seen a couple herons and other birds. I saw several types of birds and also (unfortunately) heard and saw a small snake trying to eat a frog. So, really, for the size, the amount of wildlife was impressive in early fall. Perhaps even better at other times of the year.
Again, if you're not a camper, you're about 20 miles from Emporia, which has plenty of places to eat and stay. Even the smaller towns in Chase Co. might offer some stops.
