点评:This is an impressive building, massive brick structure with large ionic columns and a steeple nearly 200 feet easily the tallest thing when it was built in 1807, in an impressive location, between the Old State House and current Capitol and just adjacent to the first civic designed park in the US, so you know it has cultural and historic significance. The structure is tied to the beginning of Hartford and also Connecticut itself.
While the fourth church structure for the congregation in a second location, the church is the original group of Thomas Hooker and Samuel Stone who left the Massachusetts Bay Colony in Cambridge over issues of suffrage to form the Colony of Connecticut. In fact, the first church building was the site of the execution of the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut to form the colony between the towns of Windsor, Wethersfield and Hartford, considered the first Constitution in the New World. For me, that significance makes this a must see in Connecticut.
It also shares a location with the Ancient Burying Ground which is the original cemetery for Hartford in the middle of the city with graves dating back to 1640 more than 100 years before the church moved to its current site. Unfortunately, we were not able to get inside on Labor Day. Still, this is an impressive structure worth just seeing its exterior for its importance to the state of Connecticut. Today it is locally known as Center Church, and it is in so many ways the very center of Hartford.
