Richmond Falls的点评
点评：After checking-in at our hotel we opted to rest-up a while; dozing for a good hour, before venturing out again to visit this highly recommended local attraction. During our rest-up we had been aware that there had been a helicopter buzzing around at low altitude for quite a while. Also we heard sirens from emergency service vehicles. Something was afoot, that much was obvious.
We set-off on what was about a 10 minute downhill stroll, from our hotel on the market place, to the falls. The falls on the River Swale are in an area below and to the south-east of Richmond Castle. This area is a popular family centre with the riverside walks, woods, a play area, and pleasant grassy areas ideal for picnicking.
The falls were mildly spectacular; we are not talking Niagara Falls or even Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn, here. The fall height is a good couple of metres, but with the recent near-drought conditions the water flow was limited to one area, rather than full width of the river. The impressive force of the falling water however was certainly evident, and would be a spectacular sight when the river is in full-flood.
As we arrived we could see that there was some sort of emergency operation underway. There was a Fire and Rescue vehicle, two Fire Service tenders, an Ambulance, three Police cars and two Air Ambulance helicopters. The downstream walkway/path was cordoned off with blue and white incident tape.
Later it transpired that a teenager had “entered the river” and had been carried off downstream. Injuries were serious, but not thought to be life threatening. The initial Air Ambulance helicopter crew were unable to provide treatment for injuries sustained to the victim, so a second Air Ambulance helicopter brought a suitably qualified doctor to the scene. The victim was then flown to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough; we saw the helicopter fly-over as we continued our stroll around the castle walk, not wishing to hang about to rubberneck.
