点评:Please read carefully in case you intend to rent a car from Greg's company named AfriCamper Expedition to avoid later on surprises even it is very long story.
From 06-15 March 2025 we rented a Foton with 1 rooftop tent from Greg with the ask to go to Gambia, which he confirmed is possible.
We drove together with a second fully equipped Landcruiser from Germany.
We got 2 serious issues
1) Handover of rental car with holes in the tire and tire toolkit broken
2) Spare tire does not fit the car
And 2 very inconvenient issues
3) Contract not valid for Gambia
4) Return of deposit
Details
1) First challenge was a flat tire overnight at Kiang West Nationalpark Campground in Gambia. 20km from paved road. The AfricaCamper is not well equipped and does not have a compressor (not contracted as Greg said, nevertheless for Africa very useful). Luckily the Landcruiser had one and we could pump up the tire. We drove to a tire repair, where they showed us, that the tire had already several huge (approx 1cm) holes which were not fixed properly beforehand. They tried to fix the tire. We informed Greg even with pictures about the situation. Unfortunately it didn't work out either because one hole was so large and on the way to Baboon Island we got a flat tire again. This time pumping up the tire didn't help and we had to use the spare tire. The toolkit to let down the spare tire under the car was broken and not usable. Only with equipment from the Landcruiser, we could let down the spare tire from Greg car.
1) Next was that the spare tire did not fit the rental car as different screw sizes are required, which were not in the car. If we would drive with wrong screws, we would significantly damage the car. So the spare tire was not usable. We called Greg and reported the challenge and send pictures again. We agreed to drive with the Landcruiser back long distance to next tire repair to swap rim and tire from broken tire and spare tire. The tire with the huge hole all was fixed again and used as new spare tire. This finally did allow us to continue our journey, but we lost a full day and had additional costs because of broken toolkit, tire with holes and not fitting spare tire. We had to cover all cost of item 1) and 2) even that it was not our fault.
But the story does not end here, as we met on the Campground the next customer from Greg. The car was handed out to the next customer approx 4h after we returned the car
The toolkit for letting down spare tire was fixed by Greg within the 4 hours.
The tire with all the holes was put as new spare tire under the car and he mentioned to the new customer, that the spare tire is only for short distance not mentioning that the spare tire does not fit at all.
He did not replace the rim or adding fitting screws to the new customer, which means, new customer cannot use the spare tire at all (as we couldn't use either). I guess the situation is obvious what would happen to new customer in case of another flat tire.
And this is exactly what happened on next morning. We met the new customer as they stayed at the same campground as we did. The new customer had a flat tire this time front right. They called Greg to fix as only after 1 night and 10km. I do not know the outcome, as we left Campground.
2) On returning the car we accepted (without complaining) scratches on rental car which we paid for. When asking for compensation for all the trouble we had, a serious discussion started. I was asking for a full day compensation without asking even for compensation for the additional costs we had for fixing the tires. Moreover he saved taxi cost to the airport as the Landcruiser drove us back to the airport. Greg was not willing to accept that all the challenges around his rental car was his responsibility. He mentioned several times that the car was in garage for maintenance and they said all good. He offered only 1/2 day compensation without covering our additional costs, which I rejected, as my disappointment about his behavior on "just money" making was extreme high. During the conversation he even mentioned, that a flat tire would be our problem. And he said, that it could be, that we had damaged the toolkit too.
3) Return of the deposit of 2.000€. As we had some scratches, we were not getting back deposit immediately as the garage needs to value the cost of the damage. That's fair. Greg was handing over the car 4 hours after our return to the next customer. So there is no time to judge the damage by the garage. If the next customer would rent the car for 2 weeks, we would need to wait that time. If he has back to back customers, you might need to wait weeks or months before you are getting back the deposit. For me it is unclear how additional damages from next customers would be handled separately from our scratches.
The repair cost for some scratches at the tailgate of the pickup and on right site of the flatbed are 820€, which is extremely high for Senegal.
He was giving us 2 options for payment, with a due of less than 30 hours (!) including a Sunday
○ "Withholding of your deposit by Swikly with the handling fee of 45000F (68.60€), i.e. a total of (820.75€ + 68.60€ = 889.35€)
○ Payment by PayPal in ‘for your friends and family’ mode to avoid PayPal and Swikly fees, i.e. €820.75"
Option 1: He was telling us, that we would be responsible for the additional handling fee of 68,60€ too. The contract is a bit vague and not indicating the amount
Option 2: Alternatively we could send via PayPal "friends and family". Only after paying the 820€, he would release the 2.000€ deposit, which means the deposit would increase to 2.820€ before we are getting back the 2.000€ and no insurance of PayPal. In worst case entire 2.820€ would have been gone
4) Last challenge started at the boarder Senegal - Gambia. We went into trouble, as the rental paper were missing allowance for Gambia. We had to talk to Greg several times via WhatsApp. He send adjusted paper via WhatsApp. The boarder hassle was avoidable, if contract would have included Gambia as we had requested. A stressful and painful situation for us as it was unclear if we could get thru.
The car lacks the equipment for common situations like a flat tire. Our problem could only be resolved within a day because of the second private car (Land Cruiser)
Furthermore he saved 30€ on contracted taxi cost from his office to the airport as we drove with private Landcruiser, we paid the repair of the tire with holes we got from him (20€). He was not willing to compensate the full day lost thru tires with holes. We must wash the car before return (1h approx 10€). Plus 68€ handling fee for the damage. And he was asking for early return, so that he has more time to prepare the car for next customer. All items separately are not big topics, but if you see all together than it's been different. Overall we had 128€ additional cost on top of the rental price plus 820€ for some scratches. It's duplicating the rental price
Renting a car from him could destroy the entire vacation.
Greg is managing a private company. All good, as long as there are no problems. We have experienced AfricaCamper as an unprofessional company in regard of the rental car, the financial handling of the damage/deposit.
Most of it we have documented with pics, mails and WhatsApp conversations.

Greg在4小时内修好了拆备胎的工具箱。
那个布满洞的轮胎被当作新的备胎放在车底,他还跟新顾客说备胎只能短途行驶,并没有说明备胎根本装不上。
他没有给新客户更换轮圈,也没有加装固定螺丝,这意味着新客户根本没法用备胎(因为我们也没用)。我想,万一新客户再次爆胎,情况就显而易见了。
第二天早上,事情就是这样发生的。我们遇到了新客户,他们和我们住在同一个营地。这次新客户的右前轮爆胎了。他们只花了一晚,走了10公里,就打电话给Greg来修。我们离开营地时,还不知道结果如何。
