A Humbling, Sad yet Uplifting Experience
Swakopmund Genocide Museum的点评
点评:So glad that I had found out about The Genocide Museum on Tripadvisor before I travelled. It was a shame that my taxi driver didn't know where it was and that I had to use the mapping on my phone to locate it.
I joined a couple of chaps waiting to go in; a school visit was just finishing which was great to see.
I wasn't prepared for what I saw, from the photographs on the wall to the newspaper articles and verbal account from Laidlaw. Swakopmund for all its cheery, twee exterior carries this awful communal guilt for what happened there. Laidlaw is the main custodian of this history and he travels the world to educate the (mainly) Western countries that still hold the bones of his ancestors where they were taken in their tens of thousands for research purposes. He continues to be successful in bringing them home for a proper, dignified burial.
I visited the main museum in Swakopmund that same day and whilst they do have a section highlighting the plight of the tribes I found it more informative to have seen how both sides of the community look upon these events.
Carry on your excellent work Laidlaw. It truly was a pleasure to meet you.
