点评:We went here on a Saturday for a spontaneous late lunch & cake. My partner has been before, had a lovely breakfast, so The Governor's House seemed a perfect choice. Surprisingly for market day, there were plenty of spare tables to choose from and it is a very special and interesting building.
My partner's choice of one of the speciality warming sandwiches, with salad and crisps looked very good and I was told was very tasty. (Hence a score of 3)
Mine on the other hand wasn't so great. I am gluten free so chose soup (Heinz tomato so can't go far wrong) and upgraded with an extra £2 from bread to a cheese toastie. Correct me if I'm wrong, but with a toastie I'm expecting melting, gooey cheese which stretches as you pull the toastie apart and actually tastes of cheese. What I actually got was 2 slices of the world's smallest bread (even small for gluten free) which appeared to have been cooked separately to each other. One slice had the thinnest layer of cheese, almost transparent and not even to the edges. This looked like it had been grilled or melted onto the bread, had set solid, so the top slice just slid off. Overall it was crunchy, but dry and tasteless...the most disappointing toastie I have ever had. We didn't stay for cake and I personally won't be returning when there are so many more independent cafes to support in the town. Service wasn't the speediest either.
