The Experience:
First, the positives: The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is an architectural triumph. The building itself is outstanding, and the exhibits are a solid 10/10. Standing before Tutankhamun’s sarcophagus and seeing his gilded nested shrines (the "boxes" he was buried in) displayed in such a setting was a truly profound and magnificent experience. The collection is world-class.
Areas for Improvement:
However, the arrival experience needs significant work. Upon arrival, information was virtually non-existent. We encountered a confused crowd and only managed to enter because we saw others showing mobile tickets to a guard—had we not copied them by chance, we might have missed our time slot. There was no clear signage or guidance from the outer entrance, through security, to the waiting area, and the little information available initially was only in Arabic.
Once inside, while artifact descriptions are in both English and Arabic, they are very brief. Given the magnitude of the collection, more detailed historical context would be appreciated.
Important Tip for Visitors:
Be prepared for the temperature! The air conditioning is extremely powerful, to the point where it felt like walking through a refrigerator. It was freezing, especially in the lower galleries—so much so that we ended up with sore throats the next day. Definitely bring a warm jacket or sweater, even if it is hot outside.
Verdict:
Overall, a must-see for the stunning architecture and treasures, but be prepared for some chaotic logistics at the entrance and bring warm clothes for the galleries.
