I brought my 13- and 10-year-old kids on the bee farm tour at Hanai Hives, and it was one of the highlights the North Shore! From start to finish, the experience was educational, inspiring!
Katie, the founder, is deeply passionate about beekeeping, community outreach, and sustainable agriculture. She welcomed us with aloha and began by guiding us through her beautiful property—an abundant oasis filled with tropical trees like mango, papaya, star fruit, ‘ulu, avocado, and banana. Along the way, we learned not just about bees, but also about Hawaiian history, mālama ‘āina (caring for the land), gardening, and native wildlife.
After the tour, we suited up in full beekeeper gear and got an up-close look inside the hives. Watching Katie work was mesmerizing—she is so in tune with her bees, and her love for them is contagious. It didn’t feel like a lecture; it was a natural, immersive learning experience that left us all buzzing with appreciation for these tiny, vital creatures.
One of the most unexpected and delightful parts of the day was the picnic afterward in the gorgeous garden. Katie served cold water, fresh fruit, cheese, crackers, and three varieties of her honey—including honeycomb! Everything was delicious, and it was the perfect way to end the tour. We couldn’t leave without buying a jar of each flavor (hot honey, vanilla cinnamon, and original), plus a Hanai Hives t-shirt to remember the day.
I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to deepen their knowledge of Hawaii, support local agriculture, and connect with nature in a meaningful way. It’s a must-do experience—especially for families!
