Attractive Baroque and Impressionalist Collections by Slovenian Artists

点评：The Slovenian National Gallery is just across the street from the Tivoli park and an easy walk from the center of Ljubljana. The building looks like a classical art museum, so it isn’t hard to find. They currently have a baroque art exhibit, so there is a large set of red letters out front spelling baroque in Slovenian – “Barok.”
The museum has two parts, the original traditional building and a newer extension. The older building has some great design details, especially in the ceiling. Both are well designed and display the art well. This is not a very large museum with, perhaps, about 20 galleries.
The people at the reception desk spoke English, as did at least some of the individuals in the various galleries. One helped me to find a specific painting I was looking for, which I greatly appreciated.
Most of the art is labeled in both English and Slovenian, although the descriptions are not terribly extensive.
I liked the art, but if you are looking for a big name like a Rubens, Velázquez, or van Gogh, this will not be the place for you. The baroque section is great and very well displayed in bright, modern galleries. There are many striking carved religious statues. I also liked the Slovenian impressionist paintings – again, these are not “name” artists, but they are still enjoyable works of art. Many of these are similar to those we have seen in major art museums elsewhere.
If you enjoy fine art and want to see the works of some artists who are not well-known outside of Slovenia, this is a very good place to spend an hour or two.
