Almannagjá or Public′s rift which belonged and still belongs to the public. When the Icelandic parliament, Althingi, was still situated there, the parliamentary meetings took place in one part here during the summer.
Drekkingarhylur or the Drowning Pool is a place where women were drowned for serious offences such as incest and killing of infants. Stóridómur or the Big Judgement, a law in 1565 after the Danish King ratified it. Men were executed for these offences but were decapitated instead of being drowned.
Thingvellir is certainly well worth a visit, especially if you take time to visit all the interesting sites.
