We booked our dives and paid the deposit 3 months in advance. No one informed us that divers inactive for over 5 months must take a refresher (most places follow a 12-month rule). We had only 3 days on Malapascua, and this forced us into an unplanned check dive right after a 17-hour journey. The staff agreed to the check dive instead of a refresher and collected extra money for it.
The next day, during the first dive, my regulator detached underwater, causing air to leak uncontrollably. I had to switch to my spare and surface for safety. The dive master didn’t assist or check on me at all. I surfaced with only 70 bar left (from 200), clearly showing a serious malfunction. I asked to rejoin with new gear, but the staff told me not to for safety, so I sat out the dive.
We raised the issue with the shop, but they refused a refund, claiming their boss doesn’t allow it and wouldn’t even speak to us. The dive master instead blamed us for not doing the refresher, even though they had agreed to the check dive and took payment.
We decided to leave a public review to warn others, and after that, I received a threatening WhatsApp message from the dive shop. This experience made me regret spending my time and money here. Their negligence could have caused injury or worse.
