点评:Lynmouth is a very small, traditional English seaside town with a shingle beach and a harbour, where the East and West Lyn rivers meet and run out to the sea. It’s all very charming and picturesque.
Curiously, the Lynmouth Harbour doesn’t always have water.
When we were there, the tide was very low, and the mudflats lay bare, leaving the boats grounded and resting on the mud, tilted to the side. The tide was so low that we could see the very bottom of the harbour, its rocks and mooring ropes and chains lying exposed.
Dominating one end of the harbour is the unusual Rhenish Tower, a strange 19th century landmark. Its purpose has been lost to time but its thought that it was used to pump sea-water into bathing pools. At the time, sea water was touted as having all sorts of therapeutic qualities and well-to-do 19th century types on a health kick would make a quick trip to the sea for a spot of healthy bathing.
Right beside the harbour, is the heritage cliff-top railway. What makes Lynmouth special is that it is twinned with the cliff-top village of Lynton and the funicular railway connects the two. If you are visiting Lynmouth, then the rail trip is a must.
