Ohio State Fairgrounds' Venues Inaccessible to Those with Hearing Loss

点评：On July 25, 2024, I attended the Alabama Concert at the Fairground's Celeste Center. I. happen to have a significant hearing loss and wear a hearing aid. I was told by State Fair staff before going to the concert that the venue had an Assistive Listening Device (ALD) that complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). But when I went to the box office to get an ALD I was given a receiver that was manufactured before the ADA and a pair of cheap earbuds. Hearing aid users cannot use ALDs with their hearing aids with earbuds. The ADA requires venues to have hearing aid-compatible ALDs. When I asked for a hearing aid-compatible ALD, I was told that the venue did not have any. I ended up sitting through a 3-hour concert that I did not understand a single word of. In addition, it turns out that the ALD they offered me does not meet the ADA's technical guidelines and is not strong enough to work properly in a venue as large as the Celeste Center. To date, the Fair and Expositions Commission has not done anything meaningful to address the issue. So, if you have a hearing loss I strongly urge you to avoid the State Fair and Eposition's Celeste Center because it is not accessible to those with hearing loss. I also urge you to complain to the State Fair and Expositions Commission that you are unable to attend events at their venue(s) until they install ADA-Compliant ALD systems.
