点评:This review is for the planetarium only. We did not have tickets for the museum on this visit. This planetarium is relatively small but is still effective. It was kind of shameful for a city as big as Roanoke to not have a working planetarium for so many years, so I am glad the museum finally was able to reopen this. So awesome that it has been updated with a brand new projection system! It’s incredibly cool that one can tour the solar system with the computer program the director utilizes. It truly is a wonderful teaching tool. I hope this sparks interest in STEM amongst students in the area! We visited here a week after the total solar eclipse. It was nice to be able to learn more about what we saw during that amazing phenomenon. We attended two shows at “The Eye” — “The Sun, Our Living Star” and “Passport to the Universe.” The presentation by Chris, the planetarium director, prior to each of the films was essentially the same both times focusing on the recent eclipse. It was very informative and well done, and we had the opportunity to ask questions which I especially appreciated. We were told that this part of the program changes roughly every 3-4 weeks which I think is a great way to keep it fresh and to adapt it to upcoming astronomical events. The movie part of the show doesn’t change as frequently. The Passport to the Universe” film is a more traditional planetarium show that orients the viewer to our place in the universe. Always fascinating. I assume the sun film perhaps was being shown because of the recent eclipse. If I had to choose only one film to watch I would recommend the “Passport to the Universe” one as it is better written and is narrated by Tom Hanks. We were pleased to have time enough to take in both, though. We look forward to future shows. We thank the sponsors of the planetarium for making it possible for the museum to bring it back to life. It’s nice to have some actual REAL science taught here. We hope this is a sign of more to come, for the museum itself would benefit from some exhibit updates.
