点评:As part of my ongoing journey into the wonderfully strange world of paranormal investigation, I recently spent a night at the Hanbury Arms Haunted Hotel and Museum in Pontypool, Wales, with a group of friends.
Now, before anyone asks the obvious question — is it actually haunted? — let me start by saying that I approached the visit with my usual healthy level of scepticism. I deliberately avoided researching the building beforehand because I didn't want to arrive with preconceived ideas based on other people's experiences, YouTube videos or paranormal folklore.
We hired the entire building for our group, which is something I personally much prefer when investigating. Having only people you know and trust removes some of the variables you inevitably get when investigating alongside strangers.
The building itself certainly has character. It's an old property with a cosy, friendly and welcoming atmosphere; some of the bedrooms are genuinely charming. Unfortunately, the damp smell and visible mould in places were hard to ignore and, in my opinion, need addressing.
The investigation itself produced a mixture of absolutely nothing, things that were interesting but easily explainable, and a couple of moments that left us scratching our heads.
One of the more curious experiences involved a motion-activated light in the museum area. It repeatedly activated despite our inability to recreate the trigger, and later activated again after we'd gone to bed. Around the same time, our camera appeared to develop recording issues before eventually returning to normal. Is that paranormal? Almost certainly not — but it was certainly interesting.
We also used a spirit box, which I remain extremely sceptical about, and an Ouija board. The spirit box appeared to produce words relevant to our conversation, but I'm still firmly in the "coincidence or technology" camp. The Ouija session was similarly fascinating, although I believe subconscious movement is the most likely explanation for what we experienced.
What did surprise me was the EDF meter we had running alongside the Ouija board. The readings increased as the planchette became more active and then dropped straight back to zero when we ended the session. Does that prove anything paranormal? Absolutely not. There are numerous possible explanations, and I'd love to repeat the experiment under controlled conditions to see if we can reproduce the results. But it was certainly one of the more intriguing moments of the night.
There were also plenty of other experiences throughout the night — Rempods activating, a motion-sensitive music box going off and a door apparently slamming downstairs. However, I could come up with perfectly rational explanations for most of these. In fact, my suspicion is that my own mobile phone was responsible for repeatedly setting off the Rempod, which probably explains why it seemed determined to ruin my night's sleep!
The biggest disappointment for me wasn't actually anything paranormal. It was the history.
The building is presented with a fascinating historical story, but after returning home and doing my own research, I struggled to find evidence supporting most of the claims being made about the property. In particular, I found what appears to be considerable confusion between the history of this building and that of the nearby Hanbury Arms Inn. Some of the stories surrounding the coaching inn, the morgue and the property's supposed age appear, from what I can establish, to relate to the other building rather than this one.
I also couldn't find convincing evidence of documented paranormal activity at the hotel before relatively recent times. That doesn't mean people haven't genuinely experienced strange things there, but I do think there is a difference between people having unusual experiences and being able to substantiate claims about a building's history and hauntings.
The same applies to some of the dolls and other items presented as haunted. I found little documented history or provenance to support many of the stories attached to them.
So, would I return? Probably not. Would I recommend it? I'm afraid probably not, particularly while the damp and mould remain an issue.
That said, I didn't leave completely unchanged.
I'm still extremely sceptical. I still believe that most of what we experienced can be explained through perfectly natural causes, and I'm certainly not suddenly convinced that ghosts are wandering around the corridors.
But that Ouija session has left me with the tiniest splinter of doubt.
Not much. We're talking millimetres here. Perhaps even fractions of a millimetre.
But it's there, and for someone as sceptical as me, perhaps that was the strangest thing that happened all night.
