The Story Of Emily的点评
点评：The most impressive thing about The Story of Emily is it is equal parts over and underwhelming.
The buildings itself are very impressive, tastefully constructed and beautifully restored. It certainly feels, from the moment you pull into the car park, that this is a higher end visitor experience. Bonus for EV owners, there are some 7kwh pod point chargers in the car park.
We prebooked our time slots online. There was no information online about the ‘correct’ order to experience the rectory and war rooms, so we booked the war rooms as our first experience. However, when watching the introductory video it became obvious that it was intended for you to first visit the rectory. On reflection, I don’t think this is really an issue - but the video suggests that is the correct order.
The war rooms experience is quite amazing. It is very impressive and it is obvious there has been no expense spared. The experience was overall very enjoyable - however it was lacking in some areas. It felt there was some key information that was glossed over a little too quickly, which left some questions whilst going around the experience. It also felt like we found out a lot about what Emily did, but not who she was as a person (we were hopeful the rectory would fill this in for us).
My biggest issue with the war rooms was the shoes. Why the shoes? Within 5 minutes all I could think about was how much my feet hurt. My husband also found the shoes incredibly painful to wear. There seemed to be no explanation or reason for the shoes. If it was to protect the flooring, why not offer the alternative of shoe covers - which would be much better for those like myself who have to wear orthotics. It is a very long experience to be distracted by hurting feet.
After the war rooms, we went to the restaurant. If you are a fussy eater, expect to settle for some cake. The cake was nice, but very steeply priced (£8.50 for scones, £7 for a slice of cake!)
We finally went to the rectory. Again, we had to change out of our shoes into some very hard and uncomfortable ‘slippers’ for no apparent reason. Again, shoe covers should be offered. At the very least, explain why this bizarre detail has been included. The rectory has been wonderfully restored and as others say, it is like the family have left for the day and could return at any moment. The head sets in this building seem unnecessary. They don’t provide much information at all, and we didn’t leave having learnt anything else about Emily. We concluded our visit here after 30 minutes - which felt an appropriate visit, we didn’t feel like we rushed. However, the 4 staff members that were in the rectory clearly thought otherwise and the judgemental looks and comments muttered under their breath to one another didn’t go unnoticed.
There is a pelethora of staff members everywhere you look in The Story of Emily. Mostly they are friendly and helpful, but the 4 in the Rectory could certainly learn some decorum. The restaurant staff were particularly friendly and helpful.
Throughout the whole site there is a lack of signage - it feels like it has been forgotten.
Overall it’s undeniable that the experience is impressive; no expense has been spared and other museums should take a leaf out of their book. However, I believe once you have seen it, you have seen it - and I personally can’t see the benefit of an annual pass to return, but would recommend others visit.
