点评：On the night of February 17, 1864, Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley sank the Union sloop USS Houstonic near Charleston Harbor, the first combat submarine to sink a warship in military history. But it never made it back to port, sinking in the harbor and killing all eight crewmen. The fate remained a mystery until the wreck was found in May, 1995. In the summer of 2000, it was raised and transported to the Warren Lasch Conservation Center at 1250 Supply Street on the Cooper River in North Charleston, in the old Charleston Naval Base. Today, it rests in a 75,000-gallon tank as scientists and archaeologists continue to study the circumstances that led to its sinking. Meanwhile, visitors can view the ship, see artifacts found during excavation, including tools, see facial reconstructions of the crew and even climb inside a scale model of the Hunley from 10 to 5 on Saturday and 10 to 3 on Sunday. What's to see? The ship's rudder, the captain's gold pocket watch and $20 gold coin, a hammer, pocket knife, lantern, canteen, Union ID tag, diamond ring, gold brooch, shoe, binoculars, oil can, silver suspenders, match stick, silk bandana and the bench that the crew sat on during their last voyage.
