Unexpected gems of history on the inside, looks can be deceptive
St Mary The Virgin, Silchester的点评
点评:We parked next to this quint little church as we were going to walk the walls of the old Roman town. The church is sited within the walls of the Roman Town of Calleva Atrebatum possibly on the site of a Roman temple. The building may even have some re-used Roman materials in its construction. The building dates from the late 12th or early 13th and is a treasure trove of local history.
The stain glass windows date from various periods. There are links to medieval burials, Henry VIII. The simple font is decorated and one of the oldest we have seen.
Although there is not much to see of the Old Roman Town, a visit to this little church does make up for some of the disappointment.
Definitely one to visit if in the area.
