点评:Viewing the white cliffs along the southern coast of Sicily is something you don’t see every day. We rented a car from Budget in Agrigento to see the Valley of the Temples, the Vila Romana del Casale and finally the “Stair of the Turks.”
It was later in the afternoon we came to the sea. Parking is a bit tricky, but we managed to find a space along the road with everyone else. We had a late lunch from “Lido Scala dei Turchi” and we would recommend that restaurant. A stair case descends down to the beach. A few hundred yards along a sandy beach is one of the entrances to the “Stair of the Turks.”
At the time of our visit, officials would only let so many people visit at a time. There seemed to be a fee also. Seeing it from afar was fine by us.
These white sedimentary cliffs that look like stairs dates back 5 million years ago. It is truly a geological phenomenon and worth time and effort to see.
As for the name, “Stair of the Turks,” there used to be raids along this coast by pirates. As North Africa was ruled by the Ottoman Empire up to the 20th century, these pirates were labeled “Turks.” It was far easier calling them “Turks” than “Saracens” or even the Barbary Pirates.
