点评:This bridge spans the Ohio River from Covington to Cincinnati.
On December 1, 1866, the first pedestrians walked upon what is now known as John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge for the first time. Over 166,000 people walked across the bridge in the first two days. When the bridge was formally opened on January 1, 1867, the tolls to cross were 15 cents for a horse and buggy and one cent for pedestrians. Now, the cost to cross is toll-free for vehicles and pedestrians.
The original deck of the bridge was built at the lowest possible cost because of Civil War inflation, but the stone towers had been designed to carry a much heavier load. When it opened, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world (1,057 feet) but the record was overtaken in 1883 by Roebling's most famous design- the Brooklyn Bridge (1,595.5 feet). Two men died during construction.
