点评:We were driving to the end of the road when we saw the sign for Fort Wilkins. We were curious what kind of fort would be at the northern tip of the Keewenaw Peninsula. It isn't a fort, but rather a military post. The park ranger said that 17 buildings are open to the public, and we went inside about 12 of them. Each of them had historical displays related to the heyday of the fort in the 1840s when copper miners swarmed in to seek their fortune. Most of them didn't get rich and left quickly, but by then the fort had been built to maintain peace in the area, between the miners and with the Native Americans who had just ceded the western Upper Peninsula to the US government in 1843. Very interesting history, well restored buildings, and set on the shores of a pretty little lake. Well worth a stop.
