As You Like It - poorly performed
American Players Theatre的点评
点评：My husband and I attended As You Like It at American Players Theatre tonight, and for the first time in many years of attending APT productions, we left at intermission.
What was most disappointing was not the play itself, but the execution. Shakespeare can be challenging, but the best APT productions make the language accessible, natural, and emotionally engaging. In this production, much of the dialogue from Rosalind, Celia, Orlando, and Oliver felt so stilted and artificial that it became difficult to follow the story or connect with the characters. Rather than drawing the audience into Shakespeare's world, the performances often felt like actors reciting lines they had not yet fully made their own.
The contrast was especially noticeable when some of APT's veteran actors were on stage. Their performances demonstrated the skill and ease that have made us loyal patrons over the years. They brought clarity, nuance, humor, and humanity to the text in a way that made every word understandable and engaging.
Unfortunately, the central performances never reached that level. As a result, key relationships lacked chemistry, important plot points were difficult to follow, and the emotional heart of the play never developed. Even the character identified as the God of Nature, who was portrayed by an excellent actor, seemed disconnected from the larger production because the surrounding storytelling provided little context or clarity.
We know APT is capable of extraordinary Shakespeare. We have seen productions there that were insightful, moving, and unforgettable. That history is what made this experience so disappointing. This felt less like the polished professional theater we have come to expect from APT and more like a production that was not yet ready for the stage.
We sincerely hope future productions return to the standard of excellence that has made APT one of our favorite theaters. Unfortunately, this production missed the mark for us.
