点评：The Flavel House was one of the three museums included on our Clatsop County Historical Society pass, which was a great value. The beautiful, Victorian home, is the culminating comforts of Captain George Flavel's entrepreneurial pursuits. Gender stratification and racial hierarchy can be surmised when reading about the history behind the lifestyle of this family. The grit and ingenuity of previous generations is apparent. It is hard to fathom Mary Flavel was married at age 14, to a husband who was 29 years old. The home is wonderfully restored with authentic furnishings which are historical in and of themselves. The architecture and construction, such as the brick footings under the wrap-around porch, bespeak construction advances through time. The interior is a reminder of how labor intensive life was, even among the wealthy, as compared to the amenities we enjoy today. I observed that my husband would have to be extricated from the small tin bathtub, if he were to attempt a bath in a rare bathroom find, of the times, and he would have a hard time sitting on the low-to-the ground furniture. The self-guided tour placards provide background of "bar piloting" of the Columbia River and Pacific Ocean confluence. The power and treachery of the two opposing bodies of water, known as the "Pacific Graveyard," is a scaffold for the Heritage Museum and the Columbia River Maritime Museum exhibits. It was Flavel who established this life-saving service of bar piloting.
