点评:I’ve been a huge fan of the House of Frankenstein Wax Museum since I first visited as a child, and one of the best parts now is getting to share it with my son\. We visit Lake George at least once a year, and House of Frankenstein is almost always our first stop\!
This Lake George classic has been creeping people out since 1974, and I love that they continue to add to and evolve the museum while preserving its wonderfully weird, old\-school charm\.
The wax figures and scenes are inspired by horror and literary classics, including Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Louis Stevenson and Victor Hugo\. You’ll encounter Dr\. Frankenstein’s laboratory, The Raven, The Phantom of the Opera and The Hunchback of Notre Dame\. Over the years they’ve also added modern horror icons including Freddy Krueger, Chucky, Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers\.
After paying admission, you head upstairs to begin your self\-guided tour\. First warning: IT IS VERY DARK\! Give your eyes a minute to adjust\.
You make your way through dark, narrow hallways, stopping at scenes mostly viewed through windows into small rooms\. Many are animated, with illuminated buttons you press to bring them to life\. Considering how long some of these figures and displays have been here, they’ve held up remarkably well\.
My biggest advice: TAKE YOUR TIME\! If another group is behind you, let them pass\. You could probably rush through in 10 minutes, but you’d miss much of what makes this place so much fun\. Stop, look at all the details and don’t be afraid to press those buttons more than once\.
Don’t expect a modern haunted house with actors jumping out at you or constant jump scares\. House of Frankenstein is all about atmosphere, and it absolutely nails that creepy old\-school horror vibe\.
There’s also a darker historical and true\-crime section featuring the Salem Witch Trials and Jack the Ripper, along with torture chambers and some surprisingly realistic executions\.
Some of our favorite parts are the newer swamp area with a soft, spongy floor and creepy creatures lurking around you, the sci\-fi mirror maze, and the Chamber of Horrors with motion\-activated bodies hanging upside down in clear bags\. Near the end is my longtime favorite—the classic black hole/vortex tunnel\. No matter how many times I walk through it, it still manages to mess with my head\!
When you finish, don’t rush out of the lobby\. There are some great animatronics there too, including a talking crow and a skeleton lying inside a casket\.
And here’s one final creepy detail: the building itself is rumored to actually be haunted\. Employees have reportedly seen a female apparition that suddenly disappears, heard footsteps going up and down the stairs after closing, and spotted mysterious shadowy figures roaming the hallways\.
Is House of Frankenstein really haunted? Who knows\. I’m perfectly happy NOT being the person who gets locked inside overnight to find out\!
House of Frankenstein is wonderfully weird, creepy, nostalgic and a true piece of Lake George history\. It may not have the high\-tech scares of a modern haunted attraction, but that’s exactly why we love it\. There’s something special about enjoying a place I loved as a kid and now watching my son experience it too\.
If you’re visiting Lake George while House of Frankenstein is open for the season, make it a stop—and take your time inside\. You never know…you might experience a little more than you bargained for\. 👻
