Extremely moving and well curated museum
第九堡垒的点评
点评：This is an extremely moving place. The history is dark, but I think it's so important to learn. The museum is extremely well done, and it was larger than I was expecting. It's set up so that you walk through the rooms of the fort, and each room has a display about different topics relating to the fort's history. The displays are all very respectful, and very well laid out.
I personally didn't know any Jewish history of Lithuania, and learning that history was sobering. Over 50,000 people were killed at the fort between 1941-1944, including 9200 Jews in just one single day. It's a place that really forces you to think and acknowledge how good life is today. There's a huge sculpture outside that sits on the site of the mass grave where those 9200 people were once buried. Looking at the sculpture is really moving, and I think it achieves its job of making you stop to think about what happened there. I'm attaching a picture that I took of the sculpture to this review. When I took the picture, I didn't realize that in the distance there was a family in my picture. Afterwards, looking through pictures of our trip, I realized that I captured a family building a snowman in front of the memorial. The juxtaposition of the happy family building a snowman in front of a place where so much evil occurred has made this picture one of my favorites from our trip. To me there's a sense of life going on, while the need to remember the past is still there.
