点评:This newly opened museum, located just outside the gates of Ft. Cavazos, is worth a visit! While relatively small currently, the museum displays are thoughtfully woven into a walk through the evolving history of the U.S. Cavalry, from horse to tank and beyond. It’s quite a story, and a testament to the resilience and innovation required to maintain a dominant fighting force in today’s world. The displays are separated into eras and the conflicts that defined them, with a clear explanation of the role of the mounted soldier in each. It’s very inclusive, in a straight forward way, which I appreciated. The building itself is thoughtfully designed, and doesn’t compete with the artifacts it holds. Hopefully, future expansions will keep tradition and storytelling in mind as they are planned. There is plenty of parking and admission is free. Although we didn’t have any kids with us, I wouldn’t hesitate to bring children of any age here. The story is told well enough visually to interest the younger ones, and there is simple to understand written signage for those that can read. A self guided tour, it is small enough to manage in an hour, although history lovers will want to spend more time here! We spent about 2 hours and walked away the better for it.
