点评:We visited without reading the reviews - big mistake! I'll reiterate some previous comments mainly to indicate that nothing has changed.
Waiting time: We were told the next tour would start in 10 - 20 minutes. Wrong. We waited over 30 minutes outside, then another 10 or so minutes inside while the final guests paid. Waiting times are random -- if you show up as another tour starts, the wait is very long. If you happen to show up as a tour is starting, you are in luck.
Tour sizes: tour groups are much too big for the space. Ours had around 20 people crammed into a small foyer. This has a big effect on your ability to see the rooms.
Rooms: most are roped off, but you can glance into them from the doorways. However, the size of the tour group made it impossible to do more than glance into the room. The rooms are crammed with stuff, 99% of which is not original to either the previous owners or the time period in which the house was built. For example, the walls are covered in oil painting that they purchased from Loras College when the college was selling off its art collection. So there are random portraits and tons of european religious oil paintings. Is that what folks in 1865 stuck in their houses? Presumably not. They claim they have two chairs that were owned by Marie Antoinette. Not to doubt them, but why are they staged in this house?
Tour guides: our guide talked for over 30 minutes while we stood in the foyer and before we were given the opportunity to see the rooms. There was quite a bit of detail about the first owner's life, but it was interspersed with irrelevant stories about events tangentially linked to the house.
Gardens: We did tour in October, which is the end of the flower season in Galena. However, I didn't see anything that indicated the presence of a "formal garden" designed by a landscape architect.
My guess is that the Dowling house is no different. We didn't tour it. However, $14 for this tour was not worth the expense.
