点评:My husband and I visited the Butler-McCook House and Gardens in Hartford, Connecticut on Saturday June 3, 2023, taking the 1:00 PM guided house tour. This interesting historic landmark is part of Connecticut Landmarks, a group of historic homes located throughout Connecticut. We found out about these homes because they recently were added to the list of NARM Museums in Connecticut, which is quite exciting!
The guided house tour was a nice walk back through time and was quite interesting, being a very good way to learn about the family members who lived in the house, the time period that they lived there and the house architecture, both inside and outside. Our tour guide, Jana, gave an excellent tour. She was very friendly, knowledgeable and informative, and provided us with great details about the house and the people that lived there. She pointed out the unique features about the house and about the family who lived in it for four generations, 189 years.
The furniture and furnishings, including very nice paintings and toys, were authentic and original to the house and definitely well-preserved and being of high quality. I definitely liked the beautiful sofa that was nicely restored after it was badly destroyed when a SUV plowed into the house in 2002, as well as the other collections of items/objects throughout the house, including a very nice toy collection.
The guided house tour took about 1 hour. It was great that we were able to take pictures inside the house, making for a lot of nice memories
I also liked the separate Main Street History Center portion/section of the house. This section consisted of exhibits that provided very good information on early Hartford, in particular on living and working on Main Street in Hartford with write-ups about the houses, their architecture, and the many businesses as well as the many changes that took place throughout the years on Main Street. This section was definitely quite educational.
The unique flower gardens were beautiful at the time of our visit with everything being in full bloom. They were definitely well cared for and nice to take a lot of photos of. The grounds are well-maintained and quite impressive. We toured the gardens in a self-guided tour both before and after our guided house tour.
In total. our tour of the house, its grounds, and the History Center, took a little less than an hour and a half. It is both very surprising and quite nice that this house and its surrounding grounds still exists on Main Street. It is definitely very unique and an interesting part of Main Street and of history in general.
We were also quite fortunate to be able to park at 59 South Prospect Street, just before the Amos Bull House, the Connecticut Landmark Headquarters, heading south down South Prospect Street, at the time of our visit. This parking lot maybe easy to miss, but I believe it was brick, and it looked like there was only room for a few cars. However, I am not certain if that is the case because we did not have any problems finding a space to park at the time of our visit. .
We recommend a visit to this house, especially if you like historic places. We hope that you have the opportunity to enjoy it as much as we did. We look forward to going to more of the historic homes that are part of Connecticut Landmarks.
