点评:Neilson Alana Beach Club – 2 Week Stay
We’ve been loyal Neilson guests for years, visiting almost every location from Dahab and Fokaia to various Greek resorts and Italy. Vounaki has always been our favourite — we’ve been four times — so this year we decided to try Croatia. Sadly, Alana Beach Club didn’t live up to our expectations, largely due to how the resort (run by Bluesun) is managed. We stayed in cabin C3, near the beach. Below is a summary of positives and negatives.
The Positives
Neilson staff – As always, the Neilson team is a real credit to the brand.
• My daughter joined Hot Shots for the first week. She was hesitant at first, but thanks to Sam and Emily (“Gremlin”) she achieved RYA level 1 & 2 sailing and level 1 windsurfing. She’s now a sailing convert!
• My son loved Surfbusters so much he skipped lunch with us to spend more time with friends — thank you to Maddie and Joe for keeping him so engaged.
• The beach team and nannies absolutely deserve 5 stars for their dedication.
Special mention – Ivana from the restaurant, who made the perfect dry cappuccino with almond milk. She took the time to practise and get it right, which was much appreciated.
The Negatives
Unfortunately, the resort itself fell short in several areas:
Shared facilities & lack of security –
The resort isn’t exclusive to Neilson guests and appears to have more than the claimed 5% non-British visitors. Many Bluesun campsite guests used Neilson sunbeds, equipment, smoked on the beach, and left cigarette butts everywhere. We didn’t feel as safe as at Vounaki and couldn’t leave belongings unattended. There was also a concerning incident involving non-residents in the kids’ pool area, and no action was taken. Security wristbands for guests would help.
Restaurant & food quality –
• Flies on the cold buffet every day, with no coverings to protect the food.
• Insufficient seating during peak meal times; long queues for the buffet.
• Food was bland(lunch/dinner), lacking seasoning, and even the Italian attempt was disappointing.
Beach & equipment –
• Rocky beach with very limited beach pebbly area, beach shoes essential.
• Non-residents using Neilson sunbeds.
• Sailing boats often poorly rigged or unchecked, leading to equipment failures.
Storms –
This area is prone to Bora storms, making the weather unpredictable. We experienced two during our stay. When they hit, the beach closes and all activities are cancelled, sometimes for up to three days due to high winds. The sea also becomes noticeably colder afterwards.
Power cuts –
• We had another power cut on our last night before flying home — and this was by far the worst. Temperatures had climbed to 37°C, and without air conditioning, the cabin felt like a sauna.
The power went out at 9 pm. We assumed maintenance was working on it, but by 11 pm we were still without electricity or air con, dripping with sweat. There are no telephones in the cabins, so we couldn’t call reception. By then we had already packed all our clothes away, and my husband — who has severe heart failure — was struggling in the heat. He has a Medicare transmitter by his bedside that monitors his ICD in case his heart fails. Concerned for his health, walked all the way to reception in whatever clothes I could find in the dark, only to discover maintenance had gone home hours earlier, assuming the power was fixed, without actually checking.
The Blue Sun Reception & Neilson Ops Mgr moved us to a hotel room with a portable air con unit, but it was so loud that no one could have slept. When I asked the Neilson operations manager why maintenance wasn’t being called back — given this was an emergency — he was defensive and dismissive, insisting there was nothing more he could do. He even claimed he hadn’t been aware of the first power cut earlier in the week, which to me shows a worrying lack of communication and oversight between Neilson management and the Blue Sun team. Strange to not have a 24/7 maintenance in a big resort like this.
I told him we couldn’t stay in that noisy room, and after some back-and-forth, he arranged two separate hotel rooms with proper air conditioning. It wasn’t ideal to split the family, but at least we finally slept at midnight .
In the morning we went back to the cabin, the electricity and air con was back on. We went for breakfast, came back from the beach at 11:30am and the power had gone. So we had no power no air con ..AGAIN in very high temperatures we simply could not breathe in the cabin, my daughter was feeling lightheaded. We walked in the heat back to the reception and notified them of the power cut, this was not reinstated until we left the resort at 3pm! We had paid for a late check out until 3pm and couldn’t use it.
It’s clear this is an ongoing issue at this resort, they had power cuts before we arrived. I’m shocked they haven’t put a proper solution in place. A basic generator would ensure constant power — something guests absolutely deserve, especially given the cost of these holidays. Neilson should at the very least guarantee such basic needs. This situation is unfair to guests and well below an acceptable standard.
Accommodation issues -
• Mouldy curtains with broken hooks, noisy air-con, no in-room phone, 3 power cuts and small ants reported but no one attended.
• A stained( big patch of blood) pillow that should have never been used.
• General lack of upkeep, with glasses and rubbish left around the resort. The sewage treatment reeks as you walk past the beach volleyball area to get to the cabins. The street lights by the cabins don’t always work.
Activities & organisation –
• Confusing scheduling with three different arrival days per week and unclear communication via the app.
• Kids’ presentations were poorly timed on Saturday and certificates were given to the kids the day before departure, seems like an afterthought, missing the chance for parents to celebrate achievements. In other resorts the presentation & certificates are done on the day before departure.
• Morning-only activity sessions limit instructor time. Afternoon sessions replaced by joint clinics.
• Excursions organised by Blue Sun are overpriced (€106pp to Krka or Plitvice national parks for bus & entrance fee, €65pp to Zadar) and not well-attended. There were no sign ups for Krka so we couldn’t go. Krka duration is 8:45am to 4pm and Plitvice I think is 8am to 6pm. You need to pay Neilson childcare €12 per hour per child on top of these fees as the kids club operates 9:30am to 5:30pm .
Wellness spa – Overpriced for the quality (€50 for a basic gel pedicure with no extras). I didn’t have any massages so I can’t comment.
Final Thoughts
The Neilson team once again proved why we’ve been loyal guests for years — their energy, professionalism, and genuine care for guests are the only reason this holiday wasn’t a total write-off. Unfortunately, the resort itself, under Bluesun’s management, fell far short of Neilson’s usual standards.
From poor maintenance and hygiene issues to weak security, shared facilities, and underwhelming food, Alana Beach Club consistently missed the mark. Serious incidents — like repeated power cuts in extreme heat, with little urgency from management to resolve them — showed a worrying lack of preparedness and guest care. For the premium price paid, basic needs such as reliable electricity, proper upkeep, and a safe, well-managed environment should be non-negotiable.
While we will continue to holiday with Neilson, we won’t be returning to Alana Beach Club. Vounaki remains our benchmark for what a Neilson holiday should be — warm, personal, well-run, and worth every penny.
