点评:I visited Riga Zoo with my 8-year-old son during a long weekend in the city. Even though it was a national holiday (May 1st) with great weather—when you would expect large crowds—the park never felt overcrowded. Most visitors were clearly locals, which gave the whole experience a very authentic, everyday feel rather than something overly touristy.
The zoo itself is charming, with a slightly raw, natural vibe thanks to the many pine trees throughout the park. It also has that distinct Eastern European zoo atmosphere, which I personally really enjoyed.
Perhaps because of the holiday, there were quite a few activities going on in addition to the animals, which added extra value to the visit. There were also plenty of options for food and drinks, including stalls and food trucks.
We spent about four hours in the zoo. On our way out, we came across pedal-powered multi-person bikes just outside the entrance in Mežaparks. We rented one for an hour, and it turned out to be a highlight. The bike was easy to handle, and we explored some of the park, passing several playgrounds—including a treetop-style one that required a small fee to enter, which we visited afterwards.
All in all, the day just kept unfolding. What started as a zoo visit turned into nearly nine hours of activities. A fantastic experience that I can highly recommend.
