A beautiful winery experience — sadly overshadowed by a lack of transparency at checkout

点评:My visit to Justin Winery started with great promise. It was our first time in Paso Robles, and we arrived a day earlier than our scheduled reservation hoping to reschedule. The staff was incredibly welcoming and accommodating. The wine tasting experience was generous and informative, and the atmosphere felt truly special. I left the tasting room feeling like we had just visited the best winery in the region.
Unfortunately, all of that was undone by what happened during checkout.
We were not shown a check or final bill before payment. No one informed us that gratuity would be automatically added to the wine bottles we purchased. I only realized this after returning from the trip and reviewing the emailed receipt. At no point were we asked if we wanted to leave a tip or approve the total. I don’t mind tipping for great service — in fact, I would have gladly done so — but not being informed felt deceptive and unprofessional.
I reached out to the winery afterward, hoping for a sincere response. Unfortunately, their reply was a generic, impersonal email that didn’t truly acknowledge the issue or offer any meaningful resolution. That follow-up only reinforced my disappointment.
It’s a real shame, because the experience had the potential to be extraordinary. But trust and transparency are fundamental in hospitality — and when those are compromised, so is the entire experience.
