Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park的点评
点评：Amidst the federal recreation area and Summerville Lake Dam there is also a pretty West Virginia State Park. This is a historic park with lots of Civil War significance and a cannon, picket fence and museum at the entrance. There is no admission charge. We were only there to hike and picnic however. Drive to the end of the park road to the parking lot for the picnic areas. It is usually not crowded and the picnic area is clean, well maintained and very shady. The rest rooms are spotless. The trail to the three overlooks of the Gauley River starts behind the rest rooms. It is easy to moderate in difficulty. There are some small elevation changes especially around the overlooks and a few steps. Most of the trail is shaded and in parts passes through thickets of flowering rhododendron and mountain laurel ( in season). The trail round trip took us about an hour with stops to admire the scenery and take pictures. Regretfully this park ( unlike most West Virginia State Parks that close at 10:00) closes at 8:00 sharp. At 7:30 the custodian will start directing people to pack their cars and prepare to leave and be out of the main gate by 8:00. This is a bit of a bummer on summer evenings when sunset is late and it’s nice to enjoy the evening breeze. For those wanting to picnic later, the Summerville Lake picnic area near the dam remains open until 10:00. It is located about four miles east of Carnifax Ferry.
