A more affordable Gaudi attraction

点评：Probably not as popular as Gaudi's other buildings, the Palau Guell nonetheless still deserves a worthy mention as it's probably Gaudi's first major work in Barcelona, having been completed in 1888, long before the completion of his other more ostentatious works such as Casa Battlo and Casa Mila. Furthermore, it's also the best preserved as it never underwent any significant renovations. The mansion still has large oval gates at the front for horse carriages to go directly into the horse stables, with direct access to the upper floors via a ramp. Located in the Raval district, just off the popular Las Ramblas pedestrianized street, Palau Guell with its Venetian-style facade is easily located and is a convenient stop-over whilst walking the Las Ramblas area. At an entrance fee of €12, it's value for money for those wanting to get a taste of Gaudi without paying a hefty price and without the crowds. One of the unique features that is present in Gaudi-designed houses is the flamboyant roof terrace, which is also clearly evident in Palau Guell, with its 14 chimneys dressed in mosaics and sculptured into eye-catching shapes. Unsurprisingly, the building was designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites collectively with 6 other Gaudi properties under the "Works of Antoni Gaudi" grouping, so you’re assured of visiting a valuable globally-recognised heritage building.
