Visitors planning a trip to Broome to enjoy the iconic Cable Beach experience should be aware: this is not the year to come—nor is next year. Due to extensive works currently underway in the Cable Beach car park and ramp area, there is no four-wheel drive access to the stunning 22 kilometres of beach north of the rocks, an area long cherished by tourists, families, and grey nomads alike.
This northern stretch, traditionally open to 4WDs and dogs, has been a hallmark of the Broome experience for decades. It’s a place of freedom, natural beauty, and community—now abruptly closed off without alternative access provided.
What’s especially frustrating is that a brand-new ramp at the surf lifesaving club, just 500 metres away, could potentially provide access. Yet, the Shire of Broome has chosen not to offer even temporary allowances for vehicles or dog walkers during the construction period.
As it stands, pet owners are left with Gantheaume Point and Riddell Beach—both under strict regulations and often overcrowded—as their only options. Meanwhile, those seeking the full 4WD beach experience will find themselves shut out until the works are expected to finish late in 2026.
