点评:Since we were walking around and checking out the historic town, we parked in Ellicott City's Lot D parking lot. However, the Lot A parking lot is much closer if you are just looking to visit this railroad station museum. After all, it is the oldest surviving one in the entire country. Passenger services were offered here from 1830 all the way until 1949. Back in the day, the railroad station, and town, used to be known as Ellicott's Mills after three brothers from Pennsylvania purchased land in 1771 to build a flour mill on.
It's now a museum with FREE admission. There are two floors with the second floor reached by stairs. Even so, it is still handicapped accessible since there is a ramp outside near the turntable that can be used to access the second floor from the back of the platform doors of the waiting room.
On the first floor was the original bell (c. 1830) from the B&O Railroad's Ellicott Mills station. It's the oldest surviving railroad station bell in the country. Also on display is a Surveyor's Boundary Stone (c. 1830) used to mark the boundary of the B&O's property. On the second floor we found a room used as the Station Administrative Office from 1831-1856 then as the Ladies Waiting Room from 1856 until the late 1930s. There was also a Telegraph (America's First Internet), Ticket Office. Two ticket windows were installed, one for men on the right, and one for women and children on the left.
After venturing outside from the waiting room, we found the Turntable & Track. The B&O built the turntable to turn around trains that ran between Baltimore and Ellicott's Mills. Next up was the Freight House, which contains a 40-foot HO scale B&O Model Train Yard of The First Thirteen Miles of railroad track in America. We really enjoyed the model train display. THIS IS NOT TO BE MISSED! Finally, there was a restored 1927 B&O Caboose in which you can learn all about the crew roles of the brakeman and the trainman.
