点评:This 13th century castle ruin is unusual in that it has a triangular shape. It’s rural location near the Solway river estuary is picturesque. There are still substantial parts of the building intact and with one of the two moats around it filled with water it‘s easy to transport yourself back several hundred years and picture the scene. That scene was one of conflict as it was home to the Maxwell family who were engaged in much feuding on this border location between England and Scotland. The castle was subject to siege at times and the story of one such occasion is featured in a short video in one of the outbuildings at the visitor centre.
On my solo visit the castle was fairly busy, relatively speaking, however it was a rare sunny day in August 2024 so perhaps the weather conditions brought out some visitors. I’ve been previously when there have only be a handful of people around. There is plenty of parking on site and admission is free to members of Historic Scotland. Other visitors currently pay reduced charges of £6.00 for adults, £4.50 concession and £3.50 for a child due to restricted access whilst some restoration work is taking place.
During my visit the western range (the curtain wall to the right of the entrance) and the north west tower were closed however Murdoch’s Tower was open to access (at ground level only). There was however access up a staircase to sections of the Nithsdale Lodging on the east range, giving a bit of elevation within the castle. This area was a later addition to the property and is the best preserved section to view nowadays. Check online ahead of your visit to see which areas are being impacted by the restoration work. Despite the limited amount of areas to explore internally, the exterior is nevertheless quite unique and picturesque.
After completing my tour of the castle interior I followed a trail to the left side of the entrance to view the old castle site nearby however there are only remains of the foundations. The nature trail which circuits to the right of the castle entrance was not accessible due to a collapsed wooden bridge at the time of my visit.
The visitor centre has a small café and shop. If you’re looking for a meal the nearby “Boathouse” or “Nith Hotel” both at Glencaple are decent options.
