点评:Decided on a whim to detour from my trek home to visit Lulworth for the first time. Super easy to find and, as midweek in March, the car park was nearly empty.
I already knew about the £3 charge (pay on exit) but since my English Heritage membership meant free entry to the castle I was happy to contribute something.
I do love a castle and this one looks like something a child would draw. Just the exterior steps feel like the grandest entrance you could imagine. I can see exactly why it’s popular for weddings.
The interior is a different story … it’s a fascinating ruin (fire damaged) but check out the info panels for photos of what it looked like when lived in during the 1920s.
And the fire revealed more of the history of the place’s Jacobean hunting lodge origins.
I enjoyed taking the modern staircase up the tower to see the 360 degree view to the sea. So peaceful … apart from the firing exercises at the nearby army camp!
The museum / history down in the basement is a bit of a rabbit warren but contains some interesting information especially about the fire.
I also wandered around the grounds to the churches so overall spent a very nice couple of hours feeling a little like a 1920s princess.
