A Day with the treasures at Sutton Hoo

点评：As an Australian, I knew very little about this place, but my friends with whom I was staying in the UK, suggested that we go there....first of all, we went to the actual site. There is a wonderful museum, reasonably modern, and beautifully laid out, giving great insights into the history surrounding the dig and the discoveries and the meanings of the treasures themselves. These of course, are only replicas, as the originals are all in the British Museum in London. In summer, I imagine many people come and picnic there, but as it was winter, we walked swiftly to the mounds, where there is a viewing tower, which can be easily climbed, so the sites can be easily seen. The splendid house of Mrs Pretty is open for inspection at certain times.
There is a cafe and refreshments are available with friendly service. I was impressed by the graciousness and knowledge of the volunteers.
We then went around to Woodbridge, a 10 minute drive away, where a full replica of the boat in being built, again by volunteers.....this is truly inspiring and they are hopeful of it being finished and launched into the water in 2026.....
Give yourself a full day to enjoy this historical treasure. Then as we did, follow it up with the movie - The Dig, starring Ralph Fiennes, which was available on Netflix in the UK.
I am not a great historian, but I found this place fascinating and the presentations very enlightening.
