点评:The name 'City of Caves' is a gross exaggeration. In the largest public area of the caves, there is 1 large cave and a few smaller ones that would take less than 10 minutes to walk through if there wasn't a guide, and much of that time would be coming up and down the stairs. About the footprint of a school hall. Apparently, thousands of people lived down there, but you don't get to see any of that.
The tour guide was incredibly grating. A cross between a pantomime dame and a primary school teacher, talking as though we were 4 year olds, and constantly going on about 'poo' and 'wee' - in the water well, in the cesspit, seeping through the sandstone, and used by the tanners. We were all adults on the tour.
Plus the signposting to the attractive is abysmal. I said so, and the receptionist just shook her head and said, 'complain to the council'. That is apathy at best. An 'A' board could easily be put at the top of steps leading down to the caves, signposting the way, and this doesn't need council approval.
Also, Nottinghamshire Council should hang their heads in shame - they built a shopping centre above the caves, so inside you are walking past concrete supports and a concrete roof amidst the medieval caves.
For REALLY good manmade caves, and lots of them, go to Hellfire Caves at West Wycombe.
