点评：We heard all kinds of interesting details like the locks hold 9 million gallons of water and only take 8 minutes to fill/drain. That ships have to book a time and if they miss it they are fined. They use very complex formulae to determine the cost of crossing — our cruise ship’s one way passage cost about half a million US dollars, but container ships could cost more. But for container ships, this is just the cost of doing business, as it would be far more expensive to take an additional 8 days sailing time to go around the dangerous horn of South America. In terms of Trivia the concept of the canal happened around the time that the Titanic was being built so they knew they had to design things to accommodate such large vessels. As is, there are only a couple of feet clearance on either side of the ships.
