Excellent trip to the Visitors Center and Rainforest walk

点评：We took a tour out of Auckland New Zealand to the Arataki Visitors Centre in the Waitakere area. We had a very knowledgeable guide named Alex. We went first to view the beautiful surrounding area from a viewpoint near the Visitors Centre, then to the Visitors Centre itself. There is a large carved pou, similar to a totem pole in Alaska, at the entrance which shows the heritage of the Maori people. Inside the visitors center are many educational exhibits and information about the rainforest, the animal life, and culture of the area. I was surprised to see the life-size exhibit of a Kiwi bird—I had no idea they were that big. There was an interesting exhibit showing bugs of the area as well. There is a gift shop area in the visitors center, I’m not sure what else there might have been, as we were ushered to our nature walk through the protected rain forest area. We were required to sanitize our shoes upon entering and exiting, protecting the Kauri trees, which are endangered and susceptible to a nasty bacteria. We saw countless different trees, shrubs and plants and heard information about many of them. We saw several different birds—very interesting and beautiful and totally different from birds where we live in the United States. We also heard about ways they are working to protect the forests and to control pest type animals that would damage the protected trees. The lightly graveled paths were up and down small slopes, but well maintained. They were nowhere near as difficult as described in the tour information we had before going. We had an enjoyable and interesting time at the Centre.
