点评:Old St Paul’s is one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s oldest churches. It is located in Pipitea just up from Parliament and the Beehive.
The church is a wooden Gothic Revisionist church and renowned for its stain glass windows. There are 17 sets of windows including one of New Zealand’s oldest war memorials.
It is operated and maintained by Heritage New Zealand (I assume in association with the Anglican Church)
It often hosts live music events on a Friday evening.
When I visited on a Monday morning it was hosting a Campanology (bell ringing) group which made the visit extra special.
The church is almost a history book in its own, with memorials and plaques throughout. It includes many colonial names and an American eagle acknowledging the marines visit to Wellington during World War II. It could feature a more balanced view of the New Zealand War’s, including from an iwi perspective more (there is to my knowledge only a statement acknowledging it had done this from only perspective).
Well worth a visit
It was replaced by the National Cathedral in the mid 60’s but remains a treasured building.
