点评:We drove here from Van and it took about 30 minutes. The ferry across to the island was 400TL return and took about 30 minutes with maybe an hour on the island before the trip back.
The island is famous for the Armenian Cathedral of the Holy Cross, a largely intact church built on the island in the 10th century. The inside of the church has some wonderful frescoes and the original blues and reds are still visible although the majority of the painting has been erased by time or vandalism. The outside has fabulous bas reliefs which almost look Celtic and seem to show Persian and Turkish influences with some of the poses and animal carvings as well as a variety of biblical themes. There was a small cafe on the island but we didn't stop there and walked back through the old monastery ruins and graveyard.
The church was in use until 1915 when it was looted, the adjacent monastery destroyed and the monks massacred as part of the Armenian Genocide. The church was subject to further vandalism, being used for target practise and was even scheduled for demolition in 1951 as part of the government policy to erase Armenian heritage. The Armenian minority in the country is still unhappy with the Turkish name Akdamar rather than the Armenian name of Ahtamar being used for the island and church after the government's 2005 restoration of the church. The politics are very complex and go back a long time.
