点评：This is one of several WWII monuments at Utah Beach dedicated to the men who landed on the beachfront on D-Day.
On 6 June 1944, just before dawn, 23,000 American soldiers landed here. They faced stormy seas and heavy German fire from the overhead coastal batteries. Nevertheless, casualties were much lighter than at the other beaches and considerably lighter than at nearby Omaha, which was the bloodiest of all.
197 men were killed and 589 were wounded.
The Utah Beach Monument is a tall, red granite, block-like obelisk and was inaugurated on June 6, 1984 on the 40th anniversary of D-Day. It stands on an elevated platform and overlooks the sand dunes that lead down to the beach. The only decoration is a wreath which has been carved in relief at the base of the tower.
Behind, American flags fly against the blue sky and several other monuments and memorials are nearby.
TIP FOR DRIVERS:
There is plenty of free parking in an open area just off the D913. From here, you can easily walk towards the memorials and follow the short, sandy path down to the beach itself.
