点评:The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa served as ancient burial places but they are also a testament to the rich history and heritage of Alexandria. The catacombs show the influence of Roman and Hellenistic cultures. Apparently the catacombs were discovered accidentally in the year 1900 when a donkey fell into the shaft. But they date back to the 2nd century CE.
To me the catacombs were a bit of a letdown. To start with its right in a residential area. There are apartment buildings opposite the catacombs site. Surely the city can do better and keep the area free of residents especially when there are quite a few tourists.
One has to descend a lot of stairs to see the catacombs and it can get pretty cramped (not hot though). That being said, one can easily cover the top attractions in Alexandria in one day, including the catacombs.
