I’d enjoyed this museum many, many times over the years since my almost 18 year old was born. However, this museum has become quite antisemitic. I was chastised for eating apple slices in the water play area of the Backyard. Yet, there’s no signage that food isn’t permitted in the area either in that area or on the website AND a toddler played in the water while holding a snack bag of Pirate’s Booty without comment. When I called to ask if food was permitted in the outdoor water play area after I was chastised, I was told it was permitted over the phone. Yet, when an employee and a manager came outside to speak with me and saw I’m an Orthodox Jewish woman, food all of the sudden became forbidden in the water play area. Because my toddler was having a good time, I made the mistake of not leaving immediately after the antisemitism in the water play area. A bit over an hour after that occurred, the same staff member who told me that I’m forbidden to eat in the water play area chased me around the second floor. I initially just walked quickly away from her. Then I ignored her as she called after me. Finally, I turned around and told the woman that I don’t want to talk to her. The employee responded by yelling after me that she spoke to management about the signage for the water play area. Feeling unsafe, I reported the employee chasing me to the manager at the front and to Audrey O’Mallery, director of visit and support services. Absolutely nothing was done to protect me or my daughter. I was offered a refund or complimentary vouchers to return, which just shows that management doesn’t care about antisemitism.
I understand that religious Jews are no longer welcomed at this museum. It’s surprising that a museum with a rainbow sign saying “safe space” is so antisemitic.
