点评:Cahuita is a beautiful mix of jungle and beach, in the unique Carribean environment. We started at Puerto Vargas in the morning, and were very lucky to meet Richard, who became our tour guide, at the gate. We have spent a lot of time in Costa Rica, but we would have missed 90 percent of the things we saw without Richard. Definitely hire a guide. We spotted plenty of animals, including monkeys, lizards, birds, spiders, and snakes. We also learned a lot about local plants, including herbal/survival uses, and we talked about local Carribean history and culture.
After the two-hour guided walk through the jungle, we continued along the beautiful beach-side trail until Cahuita Point. We had a nice swim, and then did the final leg of the walk to Puerto Cahuita. It took us 5.5 hours from gate to gate, at a very relaxed pace. There are several microenvironments along the wall, from swampy jungle (walking on platforms) to beach.
Tips: bring plenty of water, sun protection, and maybe insect protection. Wear footwear that can handle sand, wood, and maybe a little mud. There are bathrooms at both ends of the park. Sometimes Capuchin monkeys swipe bags--be careful. There are no snacks for sale at Puerto Vargas (there is one restaurant), but Puerto Cahuita has fruit, snacks and restaurants. Punta Cahuita closed at 2 and the park closed at 3:30, so get an early start. It was easy to find a tuk tuk (or taxi) back from Puerto Cahuita to Puerto Vargas for about $10, and a guide for 2 was about $50.
