点评:Our third and last stop during Doors Open Hamilton (free event, 03-04 May) was the Museum of Steam and Technology. We visited on Sat, 03 May. We drove here immediately after visiting Battlefield House Museum & Park, about 6 kms away.
We parked in the gravel parking lot, quickly located the Steam Museum entrance and found ourselves in the gift shop. Museum staff invited us further inside the boilerhouse, to the gallery, where we were shown working miniatures of steam engines. We spent some time here reading informative panels, looking at illustrations and even trying the interactive bike pump powered engine before we continued the self-guided tour. From the boilerhouse, we took the stairs to the engineer's corridor, climbed up to the engine deck and the pumphouse where we observed one massive beam engine in action, now motorized. Can't help but be impressed as this was built circa 1859 and responsible for pumping clean water to the city of Hamilton back then--an engineering marvel. We also climbed up to the packing deck (beam deck was off limits) for a closer look at the moving piston.
Before we left, we explored the stone steps and also took photos of the exterior, complete with red brick chimney. Washrooms are in a separate building, inside what would have been the woodshed which we accessed via side door (glass doors were locked). There is a drinking water/bottle refilling station as well. Fitting since we're in Hamilton's Water Works after all.
